Have you ever wondered how well do your chickens see? We've learned that chickens have a third eyelid, called the nictitating membrane. This membrane moves horizontally across the eye from front to rear and is transparent! Just like blinking, this cleans and moistens the eyes.
A chicken has a right eye system and a left eye system, each with different functions:
The right eye works best for activities requiring recognition, such as identifying food items close to the ground while the left eye works best for activities involving depth perception, such as watching for predators in the sky.
Chickens have vision 10x's better than humans, have better color vision than most animals, with the only downfall that they don't see well at night.
Do you now have a new appreciation that your flock of chickens can see better than most of their owners!
